Description
The balustrade and wall at Castle Howard, dating from the 1720s, define the south end of the south parterre. Made of sandstone, the structure is approximately 100 metres long, running east to west, with a central gap and turning at both ends to enclose pedestals at the south-east and south-west corners of the parterre. The balustrade stands about one metre high and features an open section with bulbous balusters between the pedestals. The blind sections include fielded panels surrounding the pedestals. This feature is noted in Hussey C's "English Gardens and Landscapes 1700-1750" from 1967 and is part of the Register of Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England, specifically for North Yorkshire at Castle Howard, which is Grade I listed.
