Description
The Atlas Fountain and Pond, located in the south parterre of Castle Howard, was designed in 1850 by W A Nesfield. The figures were crafted by John Thomas, while local craftsmen created the tazza, pedestals, shells, and basin. The jets and fittings were supplied by James Easton. The figures are made of Portland stone, and the globe is made of bronze. The pond has a diameter of approximately 27 metres. At the center, four recumbent Tritons blow water over Atlas, who is kneeling on a pedestal in the central tazza. The figures were transported by rail from London to Castle Howard station, and Thomas was paid £1,183 and 10 shillings and 3 pence for his work. The fountain was showcased at the Great Exhibition before its installation.
