Description
Castle Howard and East Court is a country house located in Henderskelfe, North Yorkshire, with outbuildings to the east that were originally part of the kitchen court and are now used as estate offices and accommodation. The main structure, including the East Wing and East Court, was begun in 1700 and completed in 1714, designed by Sir John Vanbrugh and Nicholas Hawksmoor for Charles, the 3rd Earl of Carlisle. The West Wing was constructed between 1753 and 1759 by Sir Thomas Robinson for Henry, the 4th Earl of Carlisle. The interior of the West Wing was altered around 1800 by C.H. Tatham for Frederick, the 5th Earl of Carlisle. Further alterations to the interior of the West Wing, including the refitting of the Chapel, took place from 1870 to 1875 by R.J. Johnson for Admiral Edward Howard, Lord Lanerton. This work included window designs by E. Burne-Jones, executed by William Morris, and frescoes created by pupils of Kempe. The building features limestone ashlar and rubble, with roofs made of lead and Westmorland slate. The architectural style is primarily Baroque, except for the Palladian design of the West Wing.
