Description
The Statue of Farnese Hercules and its pedestal are located on Henderskelfe Terrace Walk. The statue was created in 1723 by Andrew Carpenter and is made of lead, while the pedestal is constructed from sandstone and stands 2.25 meters tall. The statue is life-sized and depicts a very muscular, bearded figure, based on a 3rd century AD copy of a Greek original, which is currently housed in the Museo Nazionale in Naples. The pedestal features two steps leading up to it, with a cavetto-moulded base and sunk panels that are adorned with garlands carved in relief, topped with an egg-and-dart cornice. The statue and pedestal were previously listed under Castle Howard with outbuildings and garden statues.
