HENDERSKELFE TERRACE WALK SE 7169 (south side) Castle Howard 12/80 Statue of Meleager and pedestal (formerly listed 25.1.54 under "Castle Howard with Outbuildings to east and garden statues") GV II* Statue of Meleager and the pedestal on which it stands. c1720. Sandstone pedestal, lead statue. Plinth 2.25 metres high, statue life size. 2 steps up to pedestal with cavetto-moulded base, sunk panels bearing garlands carved in relief and egg-and-dart cornice. Statue of Meleager, a naked young man with a short cloak around his neck, with a dog, leaning on a tree stump. Copied from a Roman copy of a Hellenistic original of the mid C4 BC, now in the Vatican Museum, Rome. Haskell F and Penny N, Taste and the Antique, 1981.
