Description

The Statue of Meleager and its pedestal, located at Castle Howard, date from around 1720. The pedestal is made of sandstone and stands 2.25 metres high, featuring a plinth with two steps leading up to it. The pedestal has a cavetto-moulded base, sunk panels adorned with relief-carved garlands, and an egg-and-dart cornice. The life-size statue of Meleager depicts a naked young man draped in a short cloak, leaning on a tree stump with a dog beside him. This statue is a copy of a Roman version of a Hellenistic original from the mid 4th century BC, which is currently housed in the Vatican Museum, Rome.
