Description
The pedestal and statue of Spinario, dating from around 1720, is a significant composite structure located in the south parterre of Henderskelfe. The pedestal was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor and is made of sandstone, standing approximately 4.5 metres tall, while the statue itself is life-sized. The pedestal features a central rectangular pier topped with a drum pedestal, flanked by rectangular buttresses that have raised panels. Each buttress supports an urn adorned with festoons and a finial on a shaped base. The pedestal includes a moulded base and cornices. The statue depicts Spinario, a seated boy who is removing a thorn from his foot, and is a copy of a Roman original currently housed in the Capitoline Museum in Rome.
