Description

The Pedestal, located in the south part of the garden at Castle Howard, is a Grade I listed structure dating from around 1720. Designed by the architect Nicholas Hawksmoor, it is made of sandstone and stands approximately 4.5 metres tall. The pedestal features a central rectangular pier topped with a drum pedestal, which is flanked by rectangular buttresses that have raised panels. Each buttress supports an urn adorned with festoons and a finial on a shaped base. The pedestal includes a moulded base and cornices. It originally held a lead statue of the Wrestlers, which is no longer present.
