Description
The statue of a satyr with a dog and grapes, sometimes identified as Bacchus, is located on a sandstone pedestal and dates from around 1720. The life-size lead statue stands on a plinth that is 2.25 meters tall. The pedestal features two steps leading up to it, with a cavetto-moulded base, sunk panels that bear garlands carved in relief, and an egg-and-dart cornice. The satyr is depicted holding a bunch of grapes, with a dog at his feet. No classical prototype for the statue has been identified. This statue is part of the historic landscape of Castle Howard, which is listed as Grade I in the Register of Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England.
