Description

The Medici Vase and pedestal at Castle Howard is a significant decorative feature purchased in 1778. The vase, made by the Coade Company, is crafted from Coade stone and stands on a sandstone base, reaching approximately 3.5 meters in height. The pedestal base is enriched with waterleaf decoration and features sunk panels, one of which bears a Latin inscription, while the other three display antique medallions. A moulded cornice supports a copy of the Medici Vase, which is adorned with figures depicting the sacrifice of Iphigenia. The original vase is housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
