Description
The statue of a shepherd boy and its pedestal are located at Castle Howard, specifically at Temple Hole Basin on the north shore. This statue dates from the early to mid-18th century and features a lead figure standing on a stone pedestal that is approximately 3.5 metres tall. The pedestal is slender with a moulded base and cornice. The figure depicts a rustic shepherd boy dressed in 18th-century attire, leaning on a tree stump. Although the dog and flute typically associated with this model are missing, dowels in the pedestal indicate where the dog was once positioned. This statue is notable as the only lead statue in the Castle Howard collection that has a non-classical prototype.
