Description
The wall and gate piers to the east of Corby Castle were built in 1844 for Philip Howard. They are constructed from dressed red sandstone with moulded dressings. The entrance features four piers, with two on each side, designed as squared columns that have decorative console brackets on the sides. Each pier has a moulded cornice topped with carved Grecian vases. The piers are connected by a curved wall that extends approximately 50 meters on either side of the entrance. This wall consists of five courses with a chamfered plinth course and moulded coping. At the furthest point from the entrance, the wall is terminated by piers that include a dated panel, a coat of arms, and the initials P.H. The railings that once accompanied the structure were removed during the Second World War. This site is included for its group value with the gate lodge.
