Description

The Shrubbery is a former farmhouse with an attached barn, dating from 1750, with 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of coursed rubble sandstone and features slate roofs. The building has a staithe house layout, which includes a two-unit house with a through passage and a barn to the left, a stair turret, and a dairy block at the rear. An additional storeyed unit was added to the right-hand end in the 19th century.

The front of the building has a regular three-window arrangement, with all windows featuring raised stone surrounds and small-paned Yorkshire sashes, although one has been replaced. The doorway leading to the through passage has a chamfered surround and bears the date 1750 on the lintel. The 19th-century unit to the right has a slightly higher roof line and a separate front entrance, with a visible vertical masonry joint and old quoining. The roof of the barn was also raised in the 19th century.

At the rear, there is a combination of stairs and a storeyed dairy block under a cat-slide roof, featuring three small windows. External wooden stairs lead to the first floor of the barn. The interior remains intact, showcasing a stone fireback and heck, as well as panelled cupboards in both 18th-century rooms on the ground floor. The ceiling beams in the main room are boxed, while those in the other room are chamfered. The dairy includes a sandstone thrall, and the barn features a 19th-century king-post roof.
