Description

Corby Castle is a Grade I listed castle located in Wetheral Great Corby. It is a 13th-century tower house that has been encased in later buildings, with additions made around 1630 and 1690. The current facade was constructed between April 1812 and September 1817 by Peter Nicholson for Henry Howard. The castle is built of red sandstone ashlar and features slate roofs. It has three storeys and a five-bay south front, which includes a tetrastyle Greek Doric porch flanked by an arcaded loggia. Above this, there is a central tripartite window and a Diocletian window on the second floor. The west face has three storeys and seven bays, featuring an open Greek Doric loggia connected to central recessed bays. Both facades are topped with a cornice that is surmounted by the Corby lion, the heraldic device of the Howard family.

Inside, the castle includes a Grecian entrance hall with moulded plasterwork on the ceilings and niches, a main staircase from the 1720s with three flights, twisted balusters, and a ramped handrail. There is also a medieval spiral staircase in the original tower and mural paintings of Alpine scenes by Matthew Nutter of Carlisle in the bedrooms. The castle is set in grounds that were laid out between 1708 and 1729 by Thomas Howard, which include many buildings and features that are listed separately.
