Description
The walls of the east range of Wetheral Priory, located east of the gatehouse, date back to the 14th century and were built for the Benedictine Priory of Wetheral. The wall is constructed of dressed red sandstone with moulded dressings and is approximately 25 metres long. It likely was originally two storeys high but now only reaches the top of the ground floor windows. The structure features a chamfered plinth course and a possibly ruined staircase at the southern end. There are two lancet windows with square heads, along with one mullioned window that has two lights with trefoil cusped heads. The windows and stonework are consistent with those of the gatehouse, suggesting a complete rebuilding of the Priory. No other parts of the Priory remain above ground. It has been proposed that this wall could have been the east wall of the Chapter House, as noted by J.H. Martindale in "The Priory of Wetheral," published in the Transactions of the Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological Society.
