Description
The Howard Tomb, located in the churchyard near the east window of Wetheral Church, is a memorial for Colonel Thomas Howard, who died in 1642. It features a dressed sandstone plinth that supports a chest topped by a shaped slab of yellow sandstone. The slab is inscribed with the names of various members of the Howard family from nearby Corby Castle, prominently including Colonel Howard, who died at the battle of Atherton Moor. It is likely that this upright stone was moved to its current location from another part of the graveyard during the construction of the Howard memorial chapel to the west in 1791. The tomb is included for its group value with the nearby Wetheral Church.
