Description

The Wetheral Cross is a sandstone cross dating to circa 1844, erected as a replacement for a maypole. The maypole itself was originally installed in 1814 at the expense of Henry Howard of Corby Castle. The cross stands approximately 3.5 metres high and is constructed of red sandstone. It rests on two squared step slabs which support a chamfered plinth hollowed to accommodate the shaft. The column is squared with chamfered corners and topped with a head carved to form a quatrefoil cross. Originally, the steps were located in the centre of The Green and formed the base for the wooden maypole. The cross was later moved to its current position. It is not a market cross, as Wetheral never held a market.
