Description
Eden Mount is a house built in 1872 for a tea merchant, and redecorated in the early 20th century. It is constructed of brick with stone quoins and carvings, and has slate roofs, the tower roof featuring decorative courses and a metal finial. The house is two storeys and has a loft. The fenestration is varied and applied to an asymmetrical design, reflecting a Victorian Gothic style. The main elevation is dominated by a three-storey tower, with facing gables over ranges to either side; the range to the left is smaller and half-hipped. Decorative verge boards and bracketed eaves are present. A bay with stylised naturalistic ornament flanks the segmental-arched entrance, the left bay canted and the right bay rectangular. The left return repeats some of these features, while the right return has similar materials and finishes but lacks distinctive design features. The rear of the house steps back in two gable-ended, verge-boarded wings, with flat-arched openings, and a rectangular dormitory block projecting from the rear of these wings. Moulded stacks are located on the rear slope of the main roof and rear wall. The front doors and all windows retain their original design.
The interior features an entrance hall with encaustic tile flooring and an original design stair rail to the rear. Cornices in the entrance hall and on the first-floor landing, as well as in several other rooms, display an Edwardian character. A room to the left, or south, of the entrance hall retains a boldly moulded Gothic cornice. A fine collection of fireplaces, some with glazed tiles, all date to the remodelling. A mosaic light reflector, bearing resemblance to mosaic work near the dining room fireplace, is located beside the stair to the loft. Early 20th-century electric light fixtures are found on the first-floor stair and landing. Stained glass panels in the entrance hall and the room to the left and rear of the entrance hall are noteworthy, displaying a mixture of abstract and representational forms characteristic of early 20th-century Arts and Crafts work.
