Description
The building is a motor repair workshop that was formerly a blacksmith's shop, dating from 1833, as indicated by Roman numerals on one pillar and the initials C.M.H. (Howard) on the other, associated with the Howard family of Corby Castle. It is constructed of tooled red sandstone ashlar with moulded dressings, featuring a slate roof and a brick chimney stack. The structure is a single storey and attic, consisting of one bay, designed to represent Vulcan's forge.
The porch has two short columns with free capitals and a rounded moulded arch that includes a carved circular panel, which is much weathered. It also has a moulded cornice and a blocking course. The round-headed entrance is adorned with continuous roll-moulding, which Pevsner notes may have originated from a church and dates to around 1200. Decorative buttresses are positioned on either side of the porch, with short walls that end in moulded piers, creating a back-rest for stone seats. The covered porch was originally used for shoeing horses. The front features a thick iron-studded oak door and lacks windows.
