Description

The Mariners House in Scarborough, located at 1-2 Merchants Row, is a symmetrical pair of buildings dating from the mid to late 18th century. The structure stands three storeys high with attics, built of ashlar stone featuring chamfered quoins and sill courses on the upper floors. It has a bracketed moulded wood cornice and a later mansard slate roof with two flat dormers. The upper floors have two windows with later glazing, while the ground floor features later canted bay windows. The central entrance has modern doors but retains its original stone surround, which includes Doric piers set in a rusticated stone arch with a false fanlight above. There are also two small central windows added on the first floor.

Inside, the building has undergone numerous alterations. The turned balusters of the open string staircase have been boxed in. The front room on the first floor has been divided but still retains its cornice and panelling. The rear room features a panelled dado and a fireplace with an overmantel panel flanked by full-height Doric pilasters.

Nos 1, 2, and 3 together form a group.
