Description
St Thomas's Hospital, built around 1850-1860, was originally the Royal Northern Sea Bathing Infirmary. This large building is designed in an Italianate villa style and has three storeys made of yellow brick. The centre of the building is recessed above the ground floor, flanked by low gabled end bays. It features a low pitch slate roof with deep eaves that are bracketed on the gables. Each end bay has segmental arched recesses containing three narrow round arched windows on each floor, with the ground floor windows adorned with linked stucco arches and keystones. The ground floor of the end bays is supported by rusticated piers and features a string course. The recessed central upper floors have three French windows, each with a cast iron balcony supported by iron brackets that extend to the eaves. The ground floor has curved sides and three windows separated by double stone pilasters, topped with a cornice. To the right, there is a three-storey extension with two windows and sill courses. The building holds an important position facing the sands of South Bay.
