Description
The Scarborough Public Market Hall, built in the mid-19th century, features a striking ashlar facade with seven bays. The end bays are plain and flanked by rusticated pilasters. The center of the building showcases a fine round-headed archway, supported by three-quarter Doric columns. The spaces between the columns are filled with walls that have full-height round-headed windows with glazing bars. The doors at the ends are heavily panelled. The building has a rusticated basement and a large stone cornice, with a half-round window in the pediment. Each end wing is one storey high, with one blank round-headed arch. Rusticated corner piers are present, along with a cornice and blocking course. The rear elevation is similar in design but constructed of brick with stone dressings, columns, and piers.
