Description
The Mariners is a former public house that has been converted into a private house. It dates back to 1713, as indicated by an eroded lintel at the rear, but the front has a late 18th century or early 19th century appearance. The building is constructed from herringbone-tooled coursed sandstone and features a pantiled roof with stone ridge, copings, and kneelers, along with brick stacks. It stands 2½ storeys high and has one wide bay, with a very irregular shape.
The left side has a 20th-century half-glazed door set within an early 19th-century dentilled surround, which is topped by a later 19th-century gabled hood that holds a lantern. To the right is an early 19th-century shop window with 24 panes. On the first floor, there are two 12-pane sash windows framed in wood architraves, and the top floor features one 12-pane Yorkshire sash window. The right front of the building is partly concealed by the adjoining property, Seacroft.
The left end has a rebuilt stack, while the right end retains an old brick stack. The rear elevation, which faces the sea, includes a fire window on the left, a modern glazed door, and a large modern window on the right, topped by a big dormer. There is also a 17th-century lintel with a worn inscription. The forecourt wall, which is about 2 feet high, has a flat coping and encloses the front garden. The building is included for its group value.
