Description

Wesley Cottage is a house located in Robin Hood's Bay, likely built in the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed from coursed roughly-tooled sandstone, with some herringbone detailing, and features upper courses that are raised above a projecting kneeler, added in the later 18th century. The roof is pantiled, with a stone ridge, copings, and kneelers, along with stone and brick chimney stacks.

The building has two storeys and an attic, with a very irregular two-bay layout. The left side has a door made up of six flush panels, which is topped by a 20th-century bracketed gabled wood hood that is set against an old heavy lintel. To the right, there are two closely spaced 12-pane sash windows, while the first floor features an 8-pane sash window with altered stonework beneath, indicating that there may have been an earlier, lower window. There is also a fire window on the right side of the first floor.

At the right side of the building, there is a small pent shed with an upper window and a low door, which holds a plaque depicting the head of John Wesley, commemorating his preaching at this location. The cottage is notable for its prominent kneelers and has a corniced stone chimney stack on the left end, with a brick chimney stack on the right end that has been rebuilt.
