Description

A row of cottages dating from 1659, substantially rebuilt in 1852. The cottages are constructed of coursed rubble stone with quoins, with dressed stone window and door surrounds, and have graduated slate roofs with stone copings and kneelers. Chimneys are rendered and positioned mid and end. The row is symmetrical, comprising a single storey and 15 bays overall, with four cottages set back on either side of a taller central block which formerly served as a library. The central block has a panel on its gable, initiallyed and dated to indicate the construction and rebuilding dates. To the central block’s front are three bays, featuring a plank door with a 4-centred head, a pointed window to each side and an oculus above, all beneath hoodmoulds. The cottages are arranged in pairs, each pair accessed via a shallow, gabled porch with a plank door. Each pair also features a single, wood-mullioned, 2-light window to either side; some windows have diamond leading.
