Description

80 and 80A Highgate is a gatehouse to a hospital, originally built in 1663, although a later 19th-century copy of a panel incorrectly states the date as 1659. The building features initials "T.S." for Thomas Sandes, a dealer in Kendal cottons and mayor from 1647 to 1648, with an added "K" for his wife Katherine. The coat of arms displayed combines those of Sandes and the Shearman dyers, which is an embellishment. The structure is made of wet-dashed rubble and has an eaves cornice on the taller central block, topped with graduated slate roofs and rendered mid and end chimneys.

The gatehouse is symmetrical, consisting of two storeys and five bays (1:3:1). The central block has a wide, semicircular-headed passage arch with a single window on either side and three above. The wings each have one window on both floors. The ground floor windows are three-light, while the first-floor windows are four-light, all featuring wood mullions and square-leaded panes. There are plank doors on either side of the passage, and on the north side, there is an iron-lidded alms box initialled "T.S." set in a niche, with two inscriptions above: "REMEMBER THE POORE" in low relief from the 17th century and "Remember the Poor Widows" carved in Roman lettering, likely from the 18th century. The interior has not been inspected, but a report from the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments in 1936 mentions an initialled and dated decorative plaster panel (T. & K.S. 1661), part of a scrollwork frieze, and some original panelling on the first floor.
