Description
The Shakespeare Inn and basement shop is a public house that also incorporates a shop, dated 1830, with the initials T.S. (for Thomas Simpson) found on the keystone of the carriage arch. It was designed by John Richardson. The building features wet-dashed rubble on a hammer-dressed plinth and has a first-floor sill band. The roof is covered with graduated slate, and there are rendered end chimneys.
The structure is three storeys tall and consists of three bays, along with a two-bay basement shop. The symmetrical wooden shop front has a cornice and steps leading down to two part-glazed doors, one of which is currently used as a window, with a window at each end. Above, there are two 16-pane sash windows. The carriage arch on the left has moulded imposts and a projecting keystone with an elliptical head. The 20th-century entrance to the Inn is located up steps on the north side in a rear passage. Each upper floor has three sashes with glazing bars, with the first floor featuring 16-pane windows.
