Description

Number 41 and the entrance to Yard 43 is a shop that likely dates from the mid to late 17th century, with later alterations including a rebuilding of the front in 1826 for Edmund Atkinson. The building features tooled ashlar stonework and has a first-floor sill band. It has a graduated slate roof with a stone chimney at the north end. The structure is three storeys high and has two bays. The early to mid-19th century corniced wooden shop front includes paired, panelled pilasters, and there is a yard entry on the right. A curved, part-glazed door is located on the corner, accompanied by an arcaded window to the left. A signboard rests on the cornice, supported by scrolled brackets and topped with a pestle and mortar. Inside, there is a late 17th or early 18th-century fireplace at the rear of the first floor, featuring a moulded surround and a panelled overmantel (now painted), along with modelled fleurs-de-lis in two corners of the ceiling.
