Description
Numbers 21 and 25, along with the entrance to Yard 23, are a public house and shop located on Highgate in Kendal. At the time of the survey in April 1984, the buildings were empty and undergoing internal remodeling. The front dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with some later alterations. The exterior features wet-dashed walls, a cornice, and a moulded cast-iron gutter supported by dentils. The roof is made of graduated slate and has rendered, diagonally-set chimneys along the ridge. There is a square structure with a pyramidal roof at the center of the ridge, which is said to have been a cockpit and likely served as a lantern to light the stairs. The buildings are three storeys high and consist of five bays. The central entrance to the yard has a projecting keystone and imposts with an elliptical head. To the right is a shop front, and to the left are two sash windows. Each floor above has five sash windows, all featuring glazing bars within stone surrounds.
