Description

Numbers 26 and 28, with the entrance to Yard 24, is a shop that dates from the 17th century, possibly the late 16th century, with later additions and alterations. The building is timber-framed and has a wet-dashed exterior. It features a graduated slate roof with a stone chimney at the south end. Above the eaves, there are two gabled dormers with tile-hung sides, decorative barge-boards, and finials. A moulded cast-iron gutter runs along the roofline. The structure is two storeys tall with cellars and consists of three bays.

The current shop front, which dates to around 1828 and may have been designed by Websters, has a corniced wooden surround with fluted and reeded pilasters. The front includes three arcaded bay windows that alternate with two recessed, part-glazed doors, and cellar windows are located below the central and left-hand windows. An entrance to the yard is situated on the right side of the building. On the first floor, there are three canted bay windows, and the dormer windows and multi-light first-floor windows are wood-mullioned and transomed, featuring square leaded panes. The centre window on the first floor has three heraldic stained-glass panels inset.

Inside, there are two original framed doors, and a closed string stair with turned balusters, which has likely been reconstructed.
