GV II

Cottage row. c.1560-70. Uncoursed limestone rubble with limestone ashlar dressings; stone slate roof; rendered concrete stacks. Original plan form unclear. Domestic Tudor style. 2 storeys; 9-window range. Two square-headed doorways with splayed architraves, label moulds and C20 plank doors; central C20 inserted doorway. Ground floor has 2-light stone mullioned cavetto-moulded windows with arched heads and label moulds; first floor has one-and 2-light stone mullioned cavetto-moulded windows. Gabled roof; gable end stacks. To rear right is one 2-light stone mullioned cavetto-moulded window with arched heads and label mould, also at first floor level are two 2-light and 3 one-light stone mullioned and chamfered windows; other windows are late C20 in similar style. To rear left are two early C16 buttresses. Interior: Remodelled as 3 cottages c.1973; some C18 four-panelled doors survive; collar truss and queen-post roof with butt purlins.lBuildings of England: Berkshire, p.215; V.M.House, Shellingford: A Parish Record, 1978, p.22).
