Description

These are four houses located at 56-62 Gillinggate, built in 1889, although the porch fascia on number 60 is partly repainted to read 1829. They were designed by J.F. Curwen for J. Taylor and others and feature an Arts and Crafts style. The houses are constructed from snecked rubble with quoins on a chamfered plinth. There is a moulded bressummer on the first floor supported by brackets. The first floors of numbers 56 and 58 are wet-dashed with a sill band, and there is a tile-hung gable on the south return. The roofs are covered with red clay tiles, except for number 56, which has 20th-century concrete tiles, and they feature dormer windows. Decorative iron finials and a weather vane adorn the roofs, and there are corniced brick chimneys. Each house has two storeys and two bays, with part-glazed doors and multi-light casements. Numbers 58, 60, and 62 have full-height canted bay windows, while number 56 features an oriel window.
