Description
This is a row of four houses, numbered 25 to 28, located on John Street in Sunderland, dating to around 1840, with alterations made to number 28 around 1900. The exterior is built with garden wall bond brick, with some areas featuring tuck pointing, and includes painted ashlar basements and dressings. The roof is slate, with brick chimneys.
The houses are two storeys high with a basement, and each has three windows. Numbers 25 and 26 originally had doorcases with a decorative, dentilled entablature supported by Tuscan pilasters. These doorways have been removed and replaced with windows. The doorcases to numbers 27 and 28 have also been removed. The basement of number 28 rises to the level of the ground floor sill string. Sashes, mostly with four panes, are set within wedge stone lintels and projecting stone sills. The sashes are likely original, with the ground floor windows having panelled ashlar aprons. Number 28 has sill strings and upper glazing bars to the first-floor sashes. An eaves gutter cornice runs along the top of the building. The roof features two dormers on number 25; one is a canted bay dormer in the local Sunderland style, with a hipped roof, and the other is flat-topped. Number 28 has a gabled dormer. Chimneys run across the ridge of the roof. Steps have been removed from number 28 and blocked up on number 27. Area railings have been renewed, and are made of cast-iron with wrought-iron handrails.
