Description

Numbers 20-23 form a terrace of four houses with attached steps, dwarf walls, and railings, dating to approximately 1840. The houses are constructed with garden wall bond brick, featuring five and one bricks, with extensive pointing; they have painted ashlar basements and dressings, and a Welsh slate roof with brick chimneys.

Each house is two storeys and has a basement, with three windows to the front. Steps rise to the doors on the right-hand side of each house. Number 20 has a six-panelled door with an overlight featuring petal-shaped glazing bars, set within a round-headed panelled reveal with an open dentilled pediment supported by attached Tuscan columns. Number 21 possesses Tuscan pilasters flanked by a plain entablature, leading to a ten-panel double door that folds back to form panelled reveals. Number 22 features an 8-panelled door dating to approximately 1900, within a pedimented surround. Number 23 has a late 19th-century double three-panel door within an architrave doorcase with a hood supported by large console brackets. Four-pane sashes, likely original, are present throughout, with wedge stone lintels and projecting stone sills; the ground-floor sashes have panelled ashlar aprons. Number 23 incorporates a ground-floor shop window. Eaves gutter cornices run along the roofline. Dormers are present: a gabled dormer to Number 20, a later 19th-century Sunderland-style canted bay dormer with a hipped roof to Number 22, and two flat-topped 20th-century dormers to Number 23. The cast-iron step balustrades and area railings are largely original, with elaborate heads. Transverse-ridge chimneys rise from the roof.
