Description

Two houses, numbered 22 and 23, are located on Chatsworth Square and were built in 1889 by T Taylor Scott. They are constructed of red brick on a chamfered plinth, with calciferous sandstone dressings, a string course, sill band, and dentilled cornice. The roof is of graduated greenslate with hipped dormers, decorative ridge tiles, and brick chimney stacks. The houses are three storeys high, with two bays each, and are designed in the Gothic Revival style.

One house has a two-storey and attic section to the left bay, and a three-storey section to the right. The left doorway has a shallow gabled porch with a quatrefoil, panelled double doors, and a pilastered, finialled surround. Above the door is a two-light sash window with trefoil-headed lights and a central colonnette, surmounted by a box dormer. A two-storey canted bay is positioned to the right. The central window features a mullion and transom with trefoil heads, comprising four lights. The first-floor window is smaller and lacks a transom. Number 22 features a parapeted balcony with tracery panels above its bay. Both gabled bays have pointed windows with plate tracery, two-lights with trefoils, a quatrefoil, and a drip mould. The gables are finished with beast finials. The interiors have not been inspected.

The houses represent a complete pair of unusually elaborately-finished late 19th-century town houses. Designs for both houses were published in The Builder/Building News on 22nd August 1890.
