Description

Numbers 1 and 2 are two houses, now converted into flats, built around 1865. They are constructed of brick with painted stone or stucco details and have a slate roof. The buildings rise three storeys, plus attics and a basement, with each house featuring two bays.

The left bay of each house has a canted bay window that extends two storeys down to the basement, with sashed windows and a cornice. The right-hand first floor window of each house is a sashed window without glazing bars, topped with a segmental rubbed brick arch. The second floor windows also have similar arches and are sashed with four over four panes. Both houses include 20th-century flat-roofed attic dormers: No. 1 has two dormers, while No. 2 has one wide dormer.

The doorways feature four-panel doors with overlights that have segmental heads, supported by hoods on elaborate brackets. No. 1 has a small sash window without glazing bars to the left of its doorway. There is a further bay set back to the left, which includes a carriage entrance with a segmental arch, along with first and second floor windows that match those of the main house. A modillion gutter cornice runs along the top, and each house has chimneys located to the left.

In front of each house, there are iron area railings with gates leading to the cellar steps. Numbers 1 to 22 Bootham Terrace represent an unusually complete row of speculatively built terraced houses, constructed between 1860 and 1870, showcasing a variety of interesting designs.
