Description

Number 13 is a house, now divided into flats, built in 1865. It is constructed of red brick with some painted stone dressings and has a slate roof. The building stands three storeys high, with an attic and a basement, and features three bays.

On the left side of the ground floor, there is a canted bay window set on a raised brick panel. This window is sashed without glazing bars and has a panelled frieze beneath a dentilled cornice. The basement windows are also sashed, featuring segmental heads and painted lintels. The first-floor windows are sashed without glazing bars and have painted semicircular arches, complete with keystones, impost blocks, and an impost band. Above these windows, there is a storey band. In front of the first floor, a moulded painted balcony is supported by a cast-iron front decorated with diagonal and foliage patterns. The second-floor windows are sashed and have architraves with segmental heads.

The attic features two gabled dormers, with the left-hand dormer being wider and now fitted with UPVC casements. Between the paired brackets that support the gutter cornice, there are raised circular bosses. To the right of the building, there is a corbelled doorhead with a segmental arch, a keystone, two carved rosettes, and a dentilled cornice. The recessed door has six raised diamond panels and a plain overlight with a segmental top. There are chimneys on both the left and right sides of the building.

The attached railings have spearhead finials and are set on low brick walls with stone copings. The gate is made of iron and features iron gateposts topped with ball finials. Number 13 and the other houses in Bootham Terrace, numbered 1 to 22, form a notably complete row of speculatively built terraced houses, constructed between 1860 and 1870, showcasing a variety of interesting designs.
