Description

Numbers 20 and 21 Bootham Terrace are two houses built in 1865 as part of a speculative development of terraced housing between 1860 and 1870. They are brick-built with painted stone or stucco dressings and have slate roofs.

The houses are three storeys high, plus attics and basements, and each has two bays. The first and second floor windows are glazing bar sashes, with the exception of those on the second floor of Number 21, which are casements. A first floor sill band runs across both properties. The ground floor features canted bay windows set on projecting brick panels, with sashed lights, pilasters at the angles, and moulded heads. The brick bases of the bay windows incorporate cellar windows with glazing bar sashes and rough brick arches. Number 21 has a wide, flat-roofed attic dormer. Each house has a doorway with a pilaster doorcase, a raised segmental arch, and a cornice. The doors are recessed; Number 20 has a four-panel door with a segmental overlight, while Number 21 has a six-panel door and a rectangular overlight. Elaborate, shaped brackets support the gutter cornice. Chimneys are located to the right and between the houses, with an axial ridge stack on Number 21. The interior was not inspected during the listing process.

Attached to the houses are railings with spearhead finials, set on low brick walls with stone copings. The iron gates are flanked by iron gateposts with ball finials. Nos. 1-22 Bootham Terrace represent a largely complete row of terraced houses, constructed to a variety of different designs.
