Description
Number 8 and its attached railings is a house, later used as offices and flats, dating from 1865. It is constructed of brick with painted stone or stucco dressings, and has a slate roof. The house is three storeys high with a basement and attic. It has two bays, with glazing bar sash windows on the first and second floors, and a first-floor sill band. A canted bay window with a modillion cornice is on the ground floor to the left; the central light is a sash window with 3 over 3 panes, while the side lights are sash windows without glazing bars. Basement windows have casements with glazing bars, and the attic has a gabled dormer. The doorway, to the right, has external stone steps, a doorcase with pilasters, sunken panels, a modillion cornice, and panelled reveals. The door itself is glazed above two panels, with an overlight featuring three narrow red panes and two square panes. The area railings have spearhead finials and are supported by low brick walls with stone copings, with an iron gate remaining. Number 8 is one of a group of 22 houses on Bootham Terrace, built speculatively between 1860 and 1870, exhibiting a variety of designs. The interior was not inspected during the listing process.
