Description
Number 11 is a house built in 1865, located on Bootham Terrace in York. It is constructed of brick with stone and painted stone dressings and features a slate roof. The building has three storeys above a basement and is arranged in three bays.
On the ground floor, there is a moulded timber canted bay window that is sashed, topped with a modillion cornice and a lead-covered roof. The brick base of the bay contains basement windows that are also sashed with glazing bars and have stone surrounds. The two left-hand windows on the first and second floors are closely spaced. The first-floor windows feature margin panes with opening casements that are two panes high below fixed lights that are one pane high. The moulded sills continue as plain sill bands, and above each sill, there is a horizontal cast-iron bar. Each window is sheltered by a lead-covered canopy supported on painted corbels, with cusped timber valances. The two left-hand windows share one canopy, while the right-hand window has a separate one. The second-floor windows are glazing bar sashes with a 6 over 6 configuration, also featuring a sill band and brick flat arches.
The doorway, located in the right-hand bay and accessed by external stone steps, has a stone surround with pilasters that feature some carved decoration on their caps. It is topped by a moulded shallow segmental arch with a keystone, and the cornice hood is supported on brackets with a lead-pitched roof. The recessed door has four raised and fielded panels, and the overlight has a segmental top. The timber gutter cornice extends between gable kneeler brackets and is supported by paired brackets rising from an elaborate fascia. The house has gable chimneys.
The attached railings feature spearhead finials and are set on low brick walls with stone copings. The gate is made of iron and has iron gateposts topped with ball finials. Number 11 and the other houses on Bootham Terrace, constructed between 1860 and 1870, form an unusually complete row of speculatively built terraced houses with a variety of interesting designs.
