Description

Number 10 is a house built in 1865, located on Bootham Terrace in York. It is constructed of brick with stone and artificial stone dressings, topped with a slate roof. The building has three storeys above a basement and features three bays. The windows on the first and second floors are glazing bar sashes with exposed sash boxes, and there is a sill band on the first floor. The rusticated lintels above the windows have individually-sculpted heads as keystones.

On the ground floor, in the right-hand bay, there is a canted bay window that sits on a brick base. This bay window has sashes without glazing bars, timber rusticated lintels, a modillion cornice, and a leaded roof. The basement level of the canted bay has rubbed brick flat arches and glazing bar sashes. To the right of the main entrance steps, there is a narrow cellar window, and to the left, a cellar doorway with a four-panel door and a shallow overlight made up of three panes.

The main doorway features brick pilasters with roll-moulded corners and stone caps and bases, supporting a semicircular arch with a sculpted keystone and an archivolt adorned with polychrome tiles. The recessed door has six raised and fielded panels, and above it is a plain semicircular overlight. Pilaster strips on either side of the facade rise from the first-floor sill band to corbelled kneelers carved with lions' heads. The building also has a timber modillion gutter cornice and shared chimneys on both sides.

The attached railings have spear-head finials and are set on low brick walls with stone copings. The gate is made of iron and features iron gateposts topped with ball finials. Number 10 and the other houses on Bootham Terrace, built between 1860 and 1870, form a notably complete row of terraced houses with a variety of interesting designs.
