Description

Number 9 is a house built in 1865, located on Bootham Terrace in York. It is constructed of brick with some stone detailing and features a slate roof. The building has a gabled facade, with the cellar and ground floors projecting forward under a hipped slate roof. It consists of three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with two bays.

The windows are sashed without glazing bars and are topped with 2-centred arches made of rubbed brick, supported by stone blocks with diamond rustication and keystones that are also rusticated. The attic has a single window within the gable. On the ground floor, there are three windows, with the outer ones being narrower. The basement features three similar windows, but these have plain segmental brick arches.

To the right of the building, the doorway has an arch that matches the windows and is supported by a corbel. The door is recessed and has four raised and fielded panels with bolection mouldings. At the eaves of the ground-floor projection, there is a course of bricks with a zig-zag pattern. Below the gable coping, there is a similar course, and a course of saw-tooth brickwork rises from corbels on either side to follow the line of the gable. There are chimneys on both the left and right sides.

The area railings are set on low brick walls topped with stone copings and feature spear-head finials. Number 9 and the other houses on Bootham Terrace, built between 1860 and 1870, form an unusually complete row of terraced houses with a variety of interesting designs.
