Description
Numbers 16 and 17 are two houses built in 1865 as part of Bootham Terrace in York. The houses are constructed of brick with red rubbed brick flat arches, and have slate roofs. They are three storeys high plus attics and basements. Each house has two bays, with a canted bay window on the ground floor to the left. The ground floor windows have sashes, a dentilled cornice, and a brick base containing basement windows with glazing bar sashes and stone lintels. The first and second floor windows are sashed with brick arches. Number 16 has a gabled attic dormer. The doorcases have elaborate brackets, frieze blocks, dentilled cornices, panelled reveals, and pilasters with sunken panels. The doors have six moulded panels of equal size, with overlights featuring segmental tops. Both houses have modillioned gutter cornices, with the eaves of Number 17 being at a slightly lower level than Number 16. Chimneys are located to the left, the right, and between the houses. The attached railings have pointed finials, sit atop low brick walls with stone copings, and include iron gates and gateposts with ball finials. Numbers 1 to 22 Bootham Terrace form a row of speculatively built terraced houses constructed between 1860 and 1870, exhibiting a variety of different designs. The interior was not inspected.
