Description

Numbers 18 and 19 are two houses built in 1865, located on Bootham Terrace in York. They are constructed of brick, with the ground floor and basement of No. 19 having painted brick, and some painted stone dressings. The houses have a slate roof and rise three storeys plus attics and basements, with each house featuring two bays.

On the ground floor, there are canted bay windows on the left, which are set on projecting brick panels and flanked by pilasters. These bay windows have sashes and cornices, and their bases contain basement windows that are also sashed with glazing bars. The upper windows are sashes with brick arches, and there is a sill band at the first floor. The doorcases are pilastered with raised segmental arches and cornices, leading to recessed doors. The door to No. 18 has four panels, with the upper two being round-headed, while the door to No. 19 has six raised and fielded panels. No. 18 features a narrow gabled attic dormer, and both houses have shaped brackets supporting their gutter cornices. Each house has chimneys positioned to the left and right.

The interior has not been inspected. Attached to the houses are railings with spearhead finials, set on low brick walls topped with stone copings. The gates are made of iron and feature iron gateposts with ball finials. Numbers 1 to 22 Bootham Terrace represent a notably complete row of terraced houses, built speculatively between 1860 and 1870, showcasing a diverse range of architectural designs.
