Description

80 and 82 Bootham is a pair of houses, now serving as a house and offices, built around 1860. The buildings are constructed of brick with some ashlar dressings and feature a slate roof.

The facade is nearly symmetrical, consisting of three storeys plus an attic and cellars, with four bays. The first and second floor windows have brick flat arches and are sashed with large square panes arranged in a 2 over 4 configuration. The first floor windows are taller and include a sill band. On the left side of the first floor, there is a narrow additional window that is sashed without glazing bars. No.80 features a flat-roofed attic dormer.

On the ground floor, both houses have a painted canted bay window with a modillion cornice. The bay window for No.80 has sashes without glazing bars and a rendered base with a low cellar opening, while No.82 has a sashed window facing forward. Each side of the facade has a doorcase with panelled pilasters, a modillioned cornice, panelled reveals, and a centrally-divided overlight. Both doors have four panels. A central doorway leading to a passageway is framed by a stone architrave with a rusticated semicircular head, and the door also has four panels, with a semicircular overlight that has a central division. The gutter is supported by shaped brackets, and there is a chimney located between the houses at the front of the ridge.

The interior has not been inspected. This pair of houses contributes to the group value of other Georgian houses on this significant street in York.
