Description
The gateway, gates, and railings to Bootham Park Hospital were built between 1857 and 1858. They were designed by George Fowler Jones from York and manufactured by William Walker. The structure features a brick plinth with ashlar copings and gate piers, along with iron railings and gates. The railings face Bootham and form the south-western boundary of the hospital grounds, with the main gateway located near the south-east end.
The railings are set on a dwarf wall with deeply-chamfered copings and are supported by intermediate piers that are chamfered square in shape, tapering to become octagonal and topped with ball finials. The design includes diagonally-set square bars with a top rail adorned with spear finials, with every sixth spear finial raised on scrollwork. The hospital entrance features double gates and side gates that match the railings, equipped with closely-spaced dog bars and arcuate braces beneath twin rails with rings.
The banded gate piers are decorated with triglyphs, paterae, and cornices, and are topped with lanterns on scrolled supports. The railings end at banded end piers, with a double gate located near the west end.
