Description

Bootham House is a late 18th-century building that has been altered around 1840 and is currently used as offices and an Institute for the Blind. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with painted stone or stucco dressings and features a hipped slate roof on the left side.

The house has three storeys and three bays. The second-floor windows are sashed, while the first-floor windows are also sashed and have been fitted with balconies featuring anthemion-pattern ironwork, added around 1840. All windows have painted brick flat arches. Above the ground-floor windows, there is an applied storey band made of painted timber.

The right-hand bay includes a doorway from around 1840 made of painted stone or stucco. This doorway is framed by outer fluted Doric pilasters that support an entablature, with narrow flanking lights and engaged Ionic columns framing the door, which has six panels and a central pediment. The building also has a modillion gutter cornice with a lead hopper towards the left. There are ridge chimneys located to the right of the second bay and at the right end of the building.

The interior has not been inspected, but records indicate that it features fittings mostly from around 1840, including a stone cantilevered staircase with cast-iron balusters, and some rooms have elaborate friezes and ceiling centrepieces.
