Description
59 Bootham is a house that is now part of a school. It was built in the mid-18th century and has some alterations from the early 19th century. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with some areas featuring painted stucco or stone dressings, and it has a tiled roof.
The exterior has a symmetrical facade that spans three storeys and five bays. The windows are topped with rubbed brick flat arches; those on the ground and first floors are sashed without glazing bars, while the second-floor windows are sashed with glazing bars. Above the ground floor, there is a painted storey band that aligns with the cornice of the 19th-century doorcase. This doorcase features Tuscan pilasters, plain console brackets, and a semicircular overlight above a four-panel door. The building also has a timber modillion gutter cornice and chimneys on both the left and right sides.
The interior has not been inspected, but records from the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England indicate that there is an original staircase with turned balusters, and most of the remaining fittings date from the late 18th century.
