Description

Bootham Lodge, built between 1840 and 1845 for Thomas Walker, is a house that now serves as offices. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, featuring painted stucco and timber dressings, topped with hipped slate roofs. The main building is three storeys high and has three bays, with two-storey, one-bay wings on either side. The second-floor windows and those in the wings are sashed, while the other windows are sashed without glazing bars. The central window on the first floor and the ground-floor windows have decorative surrounds with Tuscan pilasters and cornices. The window cornices of the outer bays project as balconies for the first-floor windows, adorned with railings that have wheel-like circular patterns. Other windows are framed with architraves. The porch features unfluted Greek Doric columns and pilaster responds, creating a balcony with railings that match those of the adjacent windows. The door has eight raised and fielded panels and is set within an architrave. The left-hand wing includes a carriage entrance on the ground floor with an elliptical brick arch, alongside a smaller pedestrian entrance to the right. The main eaves are supported by paired rectangular brackets, and there are chimneys on either side of the main building. The interior has not been inspected, but records indicate an entrance hall with two Doric columns, two staircases with cast-iron balusters and mahogany handrails, and original fittings such as cornices, overdoors, and a fireplace designed by Wolstenholme. The basement areas are enclosed by iron railings on low stone copings.
