Description

Number 49 is a late 17th-century house that has been converted into part of a school. It was raised by a storey around 1738, and the doorway was altered in the late 18th century. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with painted stone dressings and features a hipped slate roof.

The exterior has three storeys and four bays, with chamfered quoins and two storey bands, the upper of which is moulded and may have originally served as the eaves cornice. The current cornice gutter is made of timber and has modillions. The windows are boxed sashes with glazing bars, featuring rubbed brick arches with keystones. The doorway, located in the third bay, has a door with six raised and fielded panels, a fanlight, and a doorcase with fluted pilasters supporting an open pediment. There are no visible chimneys. A bronze plaque on the front wall incorrectly states that Joseph Rowntree lived here from 1836 to 1925.

The interior has not been inspected, but records indicate good quality fittings from around 1738, including a staircase with turned balusters. Two ground floor rooms have panelling and fireplaces with moulded surrounds, while the upper floor rooms contain simple 18th-century fittings and a fireplace.

The basement area is enclosed by iron railings on low stone copings, with the standards topped by urn finials.
