Description

No. 84 Bootham is a building located in York, dating from the early 19th century with later alterations. It consists of two houses that have been converted into a shop and flats. The structure is made of grey-brown brick and stucco, featuring painted stone dressings and a slate roof.

The exterior stands three storeys high plus an attic and has a main facade with three bays. The left side has painted chamfered quoins and a timber gutter supported by brackets. The windows are sash type with rough brick arches; the sashes in the left bay include glazing bars, while those in the other bays do not. The right bay features a late 19th-century timber shopfront with reeded pilaster sides. In the central bay, there is a four-panel door with an overlight, panelled reveals, and an Ionic pilaster doorcase. The building has chimneys positioned in front of the ridge on the right and to the right of the first bay.

The left-hand gable wall, facing Bootham Terrace, is stuccoed and has one bay on each side of a round-headed stair window. The left bay has blank window recesses, while the right bay has no window on the ground floor and glazing bar sashes above. The attic is illuminated by two 20th-century casements. On the ground floor, there are small round window openings flanking the central doorway, which features an Ionic pilaster doorcase and a 20th-century glazed door. The interior has not been inspected.
